SDC's background

The SDC Group originally emerged from the association of Danish savings banks' computer centres. The association was established in 1963 in order to meet the electronic banking needs of Danish savings banks. Then as now, the basic concept was: working together to achieve lower costs for the individual through economies of scale.

The first centre under SDC, the Copenhagen centre became operational in 1964. In 1966 another centre was opened in Århus and another in Odense the year after that. At the time it was important for the savings banks and operational centres to be close to one another.

As the 1960´s progressed, SDC's market share increased sharply. By the start of the 1970´s - just ten years after being established - virtually all Danish savings banks which needed EDP services had joined SDC.

With the introduction of online technology at the beginning of the 1970's the centres in Århus and Odense were closed and all the operations were combined first in Copenhagen and were subsequently transferred to SDC's present premises in Ballerup. The number of system solutions offered by SDC expanded in line with the savings banks' growing needs. Legislation was also a key factor in this. A review of banking and savings bank legislation in 1975 finally put the commercial activities of savings banks on a par with banks, enabling savings banks to expand their activities to include commercial customers and foreign transactions.

In order to open SDC up to new customers, SDC changed its company form in 1993, establishing the SDC Group which consisted of a holding company (SDC Holding A/S) and an operating and development company (SDC af 1993 A/S).

In the autumn of 1999 SDC concluded a cooperation agreement with WM-data and with a company reorganisation in mid-April 2000, the operating and development company (SDC af 1993 A/S) was subsequently divided into a development firm (SDC Udvikling A/S) and an operating company (WM-data SDC A/S)

At the 2002/03 year end the cooperation with WM-data AB came to an end and all operations at WM-data SDC were sold to IBM.

In 2004 the Norwegian banking group, Terra, decided to join SDC and in 2006 the Swedish banking group, Cerdo, too chose SDC as IT supplier.

As an extension of this Scandinavian expansion, SDC Udvikling changed its name to Skandinavisk Data Center A/S in 2007.

In 2009, the Swedish and Faroese banks select SDC as their IT partner and supplier. The Faroese banks will convert to the SDC system in spring 2010.

In 2009, SDC and BEC (Bankernes EDB Central) established a joint operating and development company, Nordisk Finans IT. Long-term, the company will handle joint operation and system development for SDC and BEC.
